No justification of homelessness, Pope says in visit to DC shelter

September 24, 2015

There is no justification for homelessness, Pope Francis said during a September 24 visit to a shelter run by Catholic Charities in Washington, DC.

On his visit to St. Patrick's parish, the Pope shared lunch with the homeless-- serving first, then sitting down to eat last-- and delivered a short address in Spanish. He told the homeless people in the shelter that their plight reminded him of St. Joseph, who could not find room in Bethlehem when Jesus was to be born.

Assuring the shelter guests that Jesus cares for everyone, the Pope led them in praying the Our Father-- beginning in Spanish, and inviting those who do not speak Spanish to continue in English.
