Kerry sees 'overlap' in US, Vatican foreign-policy goals

September 23, 2015

US Secretary of State John Kerry stressed the “overlap of US foreign-policy priorities” with Vatican stands, during an interview broadcast on Vatican Radio.

Kerry spoke about the Pope’s encyclical Laudato Si’, and said that Obama administration would join the Vatican in pushing for effective action on climate change. He also said that the US supports the Pope’s plea to “put the economy at the service of peoples.”

The American Secretary of State also spoke about the “humanitarian crisis” in Syria, and said that the US will cooperate with efforts to help Syrian refugees. He argued, however, that the fighting in Syria has been caused by the brutality of the Assad regime, “which Russia supports.” He did not acknowledge the US role in arming rebel groups, some of which have nourished Islamic extremism.
