English cardinal hopes Synod will offer new path for divorced/remarried Catholics

September 23, 2015

Cardinal Vincent Nichols of Westminster has said that the Synod of Bishops should consider a “path of conversion” that would allow divorced and remarried Catholics to receive Communion.

The English cardinal told a London news conference that “without a doubt” one of the foremost challenges facing the Synod is the status of Catholics who have “experienced failure in their marriage and have found a precious new partner.” He suggested that they should be encouraged to take “a fresh look at what happened” and to “grow and be more like what we should be.”

The expression "precious new partner" sounds as endorsement for remarriage after divorce. I think the Bishops should rather emphasize the need for permanence of marriage; to be true to each other in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health; to love and honor each other all the days of their lives. "Precious new partner" means broken lives and broken hearts all around, and especially the lives and hearts of children.
