Vatican may pay damages to victims of defrocked papal nuncio's abuse
September 21, 2015
The Vatican may offer compensation to the boys who were molested by a former papal nuncio in the Dominican Republic.
When questioned by a reporter from the Dominican Republic, Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office, said that any victim of the late Jozef Wesolowski should submit a claim to authorities in the Dominican Republic. Those claims would be referred to the Vatican, he said.
Wesolowski was recalled to the Vatican after complaints that he had abused adolescent boys. After a canonical trial he was stripped of his rank as archbishop and laicized. He was awaiting a criminal trial before a Vatican tribunal when he died of a heart attack on August 28.
