Bishops rue Burundi’s deteriorating political situation
September 14, 2015
Burundi’s bishops appealed for peace as the nation’s capital becomes the scene of nightly abductions and murders.
President Pierre Nkurunziza won an unconstitutional third presidential term in July, and recent days have witnessed the attempted murder of the army chief and the killing of an opposition leader.
Reminding Catholics of the fifth commandment, the bishops called upon all to “take the necessary measures to enable Burundi to return being a country where everyone feels free and where there is respect for others.”
67% of the East African nation’s 10.4 million people are Catholic.
