Peruvian prelate denounces lynchings
September 09, 2015
A bishop in Peru has denounced a social media campaign that encourages lynching.
“I saw how peasant patrols in Cajamarca have buried thieves alive,” said Bishop Ángel Simón Piorno of Chimbote. “I must say that it is not possible to encourage this campaign, because it means approving barbarism, an act of extreme cruelty.”
“The solution is not popular lynching, because we live in a society where there are institutions that should solve the serious problem of crime in Peru,” he added. “We must demand [that] the judiciary not release offenders and [that] the police always do their job well.”
