Catholic college prepared to pay heavy fines for failure to comply with Obamacare mandate
September 02, 2015
The president of a Thomas Aquinas College has said that the California school is prepared to pay heavy fines, if necessary, rather than comply with the “Obamacare” contraceptive mandate.
Thomas Aquinas College has appealed to the Supreme Court for relief from the mandate, as have other Catholic institutions. But Michael McLean told the Cardinal Newman Society that his school would not comply with the federal regulations, regardless of the outcome of their appeal.
If the Supreme Court does not take their appeal, McLean said, the college would be forced to choose between dropping health-care coverage or finding an alternative carrier that does not subsidize contraception. “Both of these scenarios will probably result in the college’s having to pay significant fines to the government,” he said.
