British scholars urge Jesuits not to close historic Heythorp College

A group of British intellectuals has joined in a plea to Jesuit officials to rescind their decision to close Heythorp College, saying that the 400-year-old institution plays an important role in educating Anglican clerics.
Sarah Coakley, a Cambridge professor, gathered the signatures of 34 people-- including the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams-- in a letter to the Times deploring the decision to close Heythorp College. Their letter said that the loss of Heythorp would be a "serious blow" to many people outside the Catholic community.
Jesuit administrators announced in June that Heythorp would be closed in 2018 due to a financial crisis.
