Cardinal Pell: intent on changing perception of Vatican financial incompetence
August 25, 2015
Cardinal George Pell, the prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, has acknowledged that the Vatican had a reputation for financial mismanagement and naivete, which his office is now working to change.
Speaking to an audience in Rimini, Italy, the Australian prelate cited a member of the European nobility, who had said that the perception of the Vatican has been similar to that of "an old noble family that was going bankrupt, losing all its money. They were expected to be incompetent, extravagant, and easy pickings for thieves."
Cardinal Pell said that transparency in financial transactions and proper accounting were the best means of ensuring that the Vatican's economic affairs would be handled with competence and integrity.
