Pope joins faithful in pews for Mass at saint’s tomb

August 25, 2015

An official of the Secretariat of State was surprised to see Pope Francis in the pews as he celebrated a 7:00 AM Mass on August 21 at St. Pius X’s tomb in St. Peter’s Basilica.

Pope Francis, who had already celebrated a private Mass earlier in the day, went to the saint’s tomb to pray for catechists and decided to join the faithful for the Mass, during which he exchanged the sign of peace and received Holy Communion.

The two Pontiffs share “a style of church where everyone -- pastors and faithful -- are brothers and sisters,” said the official, Msgr. Lucio Bonora. “It's the style and sensitivity of a man who was placed by the Lord at the service of the entire Church, but who wants to walk with all the faithful with simplicity, modesty, and the example of the saints.”
