Cardinal Parolin to Rimini Meeting: only God can fill the human heart

August 20, 2015

At the request of Pope Francis, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s Secretary of State, has written a message to the bishop of Rimini, Italy, on the occasion of the 36th Rimini Meeting organized by Communion and Liberation.

The ecclesial movement was founded by the Servant of God Father Luigi Giussani (1922-2005), whose beatification cause is in its initial stages.

The theme of this year’s meeting is a quotation from the late Italian poet Mario Luzi: “What is this lack a lack of, oh heart, of which all of a sudden you are full?”

In his message, Cardinal Parolin reflected on the situation of the heart that stifles questions about the meaning of life.

“God, the infinite Mystery, bent over our nothingness thirsty for him, and offered the answer that all await without realizing it, while they search for it in success, in money, in power, in drugs of all kinds, in the affirmation of their momentary desires,” he wrote. “Only the initiative of God the Creator can fill the measure of the heart; and he has come to encounter us, to allow himself be found by us as a friend is found. And thus we can rest even in a stormy sea, because we are certain of his presence.”
