Cardinal Zen denounces demolition of crosses

August 18, 2015

Cardinal Joseph Zen, the retired bishop of Hong Kong, has joined his successor, Cardinal John Tong Hon, in denouncing the campaign to demolish crosses in the Chinese province of Zhejiang.

“The authorities removing the crosses are insulting our faith [and] violating our rights that are guaranteed by the constitution,” Cardinal Zen preached on August 14. “I initially thought the campaign was a local government's decision. But since it has been ongoing for some time, I come to believe it is a state policy, which is very terrible and is a serious regression of the religious policy.”

Cardinal Zen also criticized the Communist government’s policy of selecting bishops, according to a UCA News report.
