French government hikes security for churches, responding to threats of Islamic terror

August 14, 2015

The French government has increased police presence around Catholic churches in answer to threats of an Islamic terrorist attack on the feast of the Assumption, August 15.

In a joint message, the French hierarchy and the government’s interior ministry warned that any church “is vulnerable today to acts of malevolence, which may extend to terrorism.” The joint statement asked worshippers to be alert for signs of suspicious activity.

Since April, 178 Catholic churches—including Notre Dame and Sacre Coeur in Paris—have been under constant police watch because of warnings of possible attacks.
