Be 'missionary disciples,' Cardinal Parolin urges future priests in East Timor

August 13, 2015

Priests should be “missionary disciples,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin told seminarians in East Timor.

The Vatican Secretary of State, who is visiting East Timor to join in celebrations of the 5th centenary of the country’s evangelization, told seminarians that “formation to the priesthood is the development of being a disciple of the Lord.”

“Discipleship is not merely a private relation,” the cardinal continued. “On the contrary, the deeper our relation with Christ is, the more we are compelled to go forth, to be missionaries, to bring what we have received, namely God’s love and mercy, to others especially to those who live on the periphery of society, those who are marginalized, those who are forgotten.”
