On Ferguson anniversary, St. Louis archbishop laments racism
August 12, 2015
At a Mass for peace and justice at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis, Archbishop Robert Carlson recalled the shooting of Michael Brown one year earlier and the subsequent unrest in Ferguson.
“We know the events (in Ferguson) uncovered a culture of systemic racism, rage just below the surface of daily life, and a court system which failed to recognize institutional injustice in its manner of operation,” he preached. “When we receive Him as the Bread of life, we can let go of hate and hurts and grievances and forgive one another-- a healing that interconnects with faith and is the first step toward building relationships and assisting those who live in poverty.”

I believe the bishops remarks about the court system in Ferguson were factually incorrect in the case of Michael Brown. However, his remarks about rage were right on target. The Church needs to direct its attention to the rage and let the government worry about the court system!
