Another Chinese bishop to be ordained with approval from both Rome and Beijing?

August 11, 2015

For the 2nd time this month, a Chinese Catholic bishop will be ordained with the approval of both the government and the Holy See, according to a Reuters news report.

Reuters reports that Father Cosmos Ji Chengyi will soon be ordained as Bishop of Zhumadian, in the Henan province. Earlier this month Bishop Joseph Zhan Yinlin was ordained as an auxiliary for the Anyan province, also in Henan.

The report, if accurate, would point to a significant easing of tensions between Rome and Beijing on the question of bishops’ appointments. The Chinese regime insists on its authority to name new bishops, while the Holy See says that all new bishops must be appointed by the Vatican. Before this month, no new bishop had been ordained with the approval of both parties since July 2012.

I worry that Beijing approves. Can that be good for the Church?
