The US Embassy to the Holy See is completing a move to a new location in the compound that already houses the US embassy to Italy and the American missions to UN agencies headquartered in Rome.
“We are looking forward to a larger, more modern facility that can provide a more functional space for our staff,” said Ambassador Ken Hackett. The new location provides better security, more office space, and a more energy-efficient environment, the embassy announced.
When plans to relocate the US embassy were first disclosed in 2013, several former American ambassadors criticized the move, saying that the closing of a separate embassy building seemed to downgrade the importance of US ties with the Holy See.
