Archbishop Cupich to be added to list of Synod participants, reports say

August 07, 2015

Chicago’s Archbishop Blase Cupich will be a participant in the October meeting of the Synod of Bishops, the Catholic News Agency (CNA) reports.

Citing an unnamed Vatican source, CNA said that Pope Francis would add Archbishop Cupich to the list of four American prelates who have already been selected by the US bishops’ conference to participate in the Synod meeting: Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville and Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Houston (the president and vice-president, respectively, of the bishops’ conference); and Archbishops Charles Chaput of Philadelphia and José Gomez of Los Angeles.

The American bishops had chosen Archbishop Cupich as an alternate delegate to the Synod. The other alternate selected by the US bishops is Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco. Archbishop Cordileone would seem an obvious choice for the Synod’s discussion on marriage, since he chairs the US bishops’ committee on marriage and has been an outspoken defender of Church teachings on family life.

The CNA report indicated that Pope Francis is likely to name another American bishop to the Synod, bringing the total number of American representatives to six. However, David Gibson of Religious News Service, citing Vatican sources, said that final American to be named would be Bishop George Murry of Youngstown, Ohio.

Ditto to comments. I am sad.

One of the worst appointments in recent decades. Chicago needed a disciple and friend of Cardinal George. Instead, it got a man who is a voice and vote for mischief.

Looks like the Bishop of Rome is packing the court.

If anyone belongs there, it is Archbishop Chaput for his leadership and the pastoral guidance most Americans look to, and Archbishop Cordileone for all he has suffered for his faithful teaching on marriage and the family. God Himself will reward them. Actually, it hardly seems necessary for His Holiness to be there! How absurd that Cordileone not be there...perhaps it is a foreshadowing of what may portend, and certainly, the curtain lifted on Church politics.

If this is true, then God have mercy on us.

Abp Cupich is an avid supporter of the "Casper proposal." Last Christmas he gave to every priest in the Archdiocese of Chicago Kasper's booklet "The Gospel of the Family." It is going to be interesting to watch the upcoming synod.

Skipping Archbishop Cordileone is a real slap. He should be getting a boost from the Vatican for his efforts in San Francisco and his strong support of Catholic teaching and leadership on family and marriage issues. In contrast, Archb. Cupich is almost literally tongue-tied on all these issues. We know which way the wind is blowing and who will be getting the red hat.
