Vatican newspaper pays tribute to classicist Martin West

The English edition of L'Osservatore Romano has paid tribute to Martin Litchfield West, a classicist who taught at Oxford and the University of London and who died on July 13 at the age of 77.

The author of the tribute, Oxford classicist Nicholas Richardson, said that West's "scholarly output was phenomenal" and that he "insisted on the need to reconsider in a fresh and critical way the traditional accounts handed down from antiquity, and to be prepared to engage in new and bold hypotheses."
