Italian prelate laments court decision on property taxes for Catholic schools

July 27, 2015

The Supreme Court of Cassation-- Italy's highest appellate court-- has ruled that the city of Livorno has the right to levy property taxes on Catholic schools.

Bishop Nunzio Galantino, the secretary-general of the Italian Episcopal Conference, denounced the decision as "dangerous and ideological," according to an Italian newspaper report, and said that it places "the guarantee of freedom of education" at risk.

Describing the cost savings to the state resulting from the existence private schools, he said that the decision manifested an "ideologization past the extreme."
