Pope Francis has sent a telegram of condolence to Cardinal Donald Wuerl of Washington following the death of Cardinal William Baum, who served as Archbishop of Washington before leading the Congregation for Catholic Education and the Apostolic Penitentiary.
"I join you in commending the late cardinal’s soul to God the Father of mercies," the Pope said in his July 25 telegram.
Referring to funeral Mass, scheduled for July 31 at the Cathedral of St. Matthew, the Pope added, "To all present at the Mass of Christian Burial and to all who mourn Cardinal Baum in the hope of the Resurrection, I cordially impart my Apostolic Blessing as a pledge of strength and consolation in the Lord."
