Coptic activist: forbid youth conversions to Islam without parental consent

July 24, 2015

As Egypt considers changes to its system of family law, Mikel Munir, a Coptic Christian who founded a political party, has appealed for a clause that would forbid youth conversions to Islam without parental consent.

The Fides news agency reported that such a clause would "help to put an end to the widespread phenomenon of disappearances of Coptic girls" and counter "the Islamization of minors under the influence of emotional or physical pressure."

According to L'Osservatore Romano, the young Coptic women-- whether they voluntarily leave their families for a young Muslim man or are kidnapped-- eventually inform their parents that they have converted to Islam.
