USCCB awards $5.2M to projects in Eastern Europe

July 24, 2015

The Subcommittee on Aid to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has awarded over $5.2 million to fund 177 projects in 23 nations.

“Recovery from Soviet rule in Central and Eastern Europe has been a slow and challenging process,” said Archbishop Blase Cupich of Chicago, the subcommittee’s chairman. “Catholics in this area are in great need of our help. The Church is doing much to support the rebuilding not only of the churches and structures, but also the lives of individuals both spiritually and physically.”

The awards are funded by a collection that is taken up in most dioceses on Ash Wednesday. The subcommittee awarded a total of $7.9 million in grants in July and December 2014.
