Vatican envoy to UN: do not allow destruction of Syria

July 23, 2015

Addressing on July 23 during an open debate on the Middle East at the UN Security Council, the Vatican’s representative called particular attention to the crisis in Syria.

“We should not continue to look helplessly from the sidelines while a great country is being destroyed,” said Archbishop Bernardito Auza. He added that Lebanon and Jordan are being strained as well because of the influx of refugees.

More generally, the Vatican envoy drew attention to the disappearance of Christians from the Middle East, as a result of discrimination, intimidation, and open persecution. “The diminution of the Christian presence is a grave loss for the entire region,” he argued.

Archbishop Auza reminded the Security Council that the Vatican recently concluded a diplomatic agreement with the “state” of Palestine, and said the Holy See “hopes hopes that this Agreement may in some way be a stimulus to the achievement of the two-State solution.”
