Cardinal Pell airs concern about Pope's view on climate change

July 20, 2015

Cardinal George Pell has voiced reservations about Pope Francis’ views on climate change, as expressed in the encyclical Laudato Si’.

While praising the overall message of the encyclical, the Australian cardinal that the Church claims “no particular expertise in science.” He said that parts of the encyclical were "beautiful" and backed the Pope's call for respective treatment of the environment. But he distanced himself from the Pope's claim that evidence of man-made climate change is conclusive.

“The Church has got no mandate from the Lord to pronounce on scientific matters,” Cardinal Pell said in an interview with the Financial Times.

Cardinal Pell, who is now the prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, caused controversy in Australia when he indicated that he did not see persuasive evidence of man-made climate change.

While scientists may not be paying off other scientists, scientists live off of grant money and if you disagree with the current political trend it becomes very difficult to get grant money. If you are an untenured scientist and you are not bringing in a lot of grant money you won't become tenured. Universities also live of off grant money.

To Goredowg: Scientists are self-deluded sinners like everyone else. Given the lack of evidence for global warming, there is massive evidence that human ideology may be distorting thought on a grand scale as it has throughout history. After decades of promoting the idea of getting rid of inconvenient life, anti-populationists have contrived this absurd means to justify their repressed moral conscience. A denial of sin creates ideology. Authentic religion is the cure for ideology.

Maybe not a secret cabal, but men with big egos. And there has been lots of evidence of faking evidence.

I am puzzled by the knee-jerk reaction by many conservatives against the hypothesis of man-made global warming. If the vast majority of climate scientists agree on this, then it is very likely to be true. I doubt that there is a secret cabal paying off scientists at the universities to falsely preach global warming. Regardless, we will still need to curtail our use of fossil fuels, since they won't last forever.

Unfortunately, I think Pope Francis' habit of speaking without enough knowledge undermines the Church and Her true message, which is simply to live the gospel where we are. We don't need any more social or political projects. They never work.

I still am struggling to read and understand the document. However, I know that much of his criticism of the treatment of the environment is aimed at developing countries where breathing the air or drinking the water is demonstrably dangerous. But what to make of his comment on the marketing of air conditioners? Is he tackling entropy? The option for comfort over true development in poor countries? Puzzles like this make it hard to get through.

Bravo indeed! And thank you for being a voice of reason and for knowing that the Church does not indeed have any expertise in matters of science and no mandate from the Lord to make scientific pronouncements or take sides in scientific debates.....or in political ones either!
