Cardinal Marx: Christians are committed to European integration, unity

July 17, 2015

Cardinal Reinhard Marx of Munich-Freising, the president of the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (COMECE), has issued a statement on the Greek financial crisis.

“I would like to express my gratitude to all who have committed themselves to pursuing the European integration project,” he said. “Despite the unfavorable portents, all parties involved – the officials of the European institutions, the heads of state and government in the Eurozone and the Finance ministers – have not abandoned the pursuit of a common European solution.”

“The vast majority of Greeks want to stay in the EU and in the Eurozone,” he continued. “Moreover, the other member states too want to keep Greece in the EU. That the solution represents a classic European compromise is evidenced by the fact that in all EU countries the agreement was both welcomed and contested.”

Cardinal Marx continued:

The Church has always followed the process of European unification with benevolent interest. With this in mind, I would like to express how happy I am that a European solution was reached by the heads of state and government and that neither the wider EU nor the Eurozone risks collapse. And yet numerous questions remain …

The project of European integration and unity has brought its peoples peace, security and prosperity. These successes need to be protected and to be shared by all. Europe is a project of reconciliation, not of division. What is now required is that all Europeans come together so that we can carry this European project forward hand in hand … As Christians we commit ourselves to cooperating in making this project a reality, and we do so with profound conviction.

Interesting in relation to the next story: that 200,000 more Germans formally resigned from the Catholic Church in 2014. Maybe if the hierarchy paid more attention to the salvation of German souls than to countries that don't think you don't have to pay back money you borrow they would be more relevant. It is evident that fewer and fewer Germans find them so.

EMU is a disaster for Greece and peripheral countries; that has been said before and will come ashore again. The Greeks have just been slapped in the face ande made fools of, their vote clearly not being worth a dime. And the problem has not been solved. Cardinal Marx should ponder his words better or else refrain from making grandiose statements; that he is German also doesn't help.
