Christian college drops student health insurance, rather than comply with contraceptive mandate

July 16, 2015

A small Christian college in Illinois has elected not to offer health insurance to students, in order to avoid complying with the federal contraceptive mandate.

Wheaton College has informed students that the school “has been forced to quickly make difficult choices” after losing a court challenge to the mandate. Wheaton is appealing that decision.

The college said that it would not offer health insurance because, under the terms of the mandate, it would be required to include coverage of abortifacient drugs and devices.

I'm pretty sure that the college in question is Wheaton College in Illinois, not the one of the same name in Massachusetts. Wheaton of Illinois is an evangelical Protestant institution. As far as I know, Wheaton of Massachusetts has no religious affiliation.

Correction: The Wheaton College in question is in suburban Chicago. There is also a Wheaton College in Massachusetts, but it is not church related.
