Archbishop says Malawi cannot escape poverty without moral transformation of leadership

Malawi will remain mired in poverty until there is a “human and moral transformation,” the country’s leading Catholic prelate has said.

"The economic transformation will never be achieved without a moral economy demonstrated by our leaders in every sector of society,” said Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa of Blantyre, speaking on July 6, the 51st anniversary of the African country’s independence. His speech underlined the concerns of Church leaders about government corruption and mismanagement.

Father Piergiorgio Gamba, a missionary working in Malawi, backed the archbishop’s message in a report to the Fides news agency. Father Gamba said: “As long as corruption, nepotism, and regionalism are the main features of government leaders, there will not be a different Malawi.”
