Italian taxpayers chose Catholic Church for mandatory contribution

The vast majority of Italian taxpayers designate a portion of their tax payments for the Catholic Church.

Under Italian law, Italians can choose a religious or charitable institution to receive 0.8% of their tax payments. In 2011—the last year for which accounting is complete—80% of taxpayers selected the Catholic Church.

    Wouldn't it be wiser to keep these things separate? Having the state dole out tax money to churches seems to have had a corrupting influence in countries like Germany.
