Pope condemns terrorist attack in Cairo

July 13, 2015

Pope Francis offered a “firm condemnation” of recent terrorist acts in Cairo, including a July 11 attack on the Italian consulate, the Vatican’s Secretary of State said in a telegram to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.

“The Pope calls on political and religious players at all levels to join together and redouble their efforts to fight the plague of terrorism and promote peace and solidarity,” said Cardinal Pietro Parolin. “The Pope expresses his sincere compassion to all the families and people affected by these blind acts of violence.”

In Egypt, a spokesman for the Catholic bishops' conference said that the bombing was intended "to send a message to the West and Italy." Father Rafic Greiche told the AsiaNews service that the attack on a diplomatic mission in Cairo was designed to show the vulnerability of the Egyptian government.
