Laity must take lead in protecting religious freedom: Cardinal Pell

July 08, 2015

Cardinal George Pell said that lay Catholics must lead the fight to preserve religious freedom, in an address delivered to an audience in Ireland.

The prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy said that recent decisions in favor of same-sex marriage—by a popular referendum in Ireland and a Supreme Court decision in the US—represent “a victory for John Stuart Mill and utilitarianism.” He said that the decisions mark “a new phase of political struggle which can only be fought by lay people.”

The Australian cardinal went on to say that the battle will involve the religious freedom of the Church, of institutions, and of individuals, and will be fought over issues including homosexuality, abortion, and euthanasia.
