Pope has impromptu meeting with crowd in Ecuador
July 06, 2015
Pope Francis made an unscheduled public appearance on Sunday evening, to greet a large crowd that had assembled to welcome him to Quito, Ecuador.
After his trans-Atlantic flight, and a short welcoming ceremony at the airport, the Pope’s official schedule had called for a quiet evening at the residence of the apostolic nuncio. But a large crowd outside the building drew the Pontiff’s attention, singing songs and occasionally calling out his name.
Eventually Pope Francis came out to speak with the crowd and led the people in prayer. Then he urged everyone to go home so that “the neighborhood can sleep.”
