Cardinal Pell's critics want a 'show trial,' his successor says

July 02, 2015

The critics of Cardinal George Pell are aiming at the “humiliation” of the Australian prelate, according to his successor as Archbishop of Sydney.

Archbishop Anthony Fisher told the Crux news site that charges that Cardinal Pell ignored sexual abuse are “tremendously unfair.” He said that the cardinal “was the first bishop in the country to move” on the sex-abuse scandal.

Archbishop Fisher said that he expected Cardinal Pell to testify before the Royal Commission into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse, and that the commission might eventually release “adverse findings,” but he voiced his confidence that there would be no new evidence of wrongdoing. The cardinal—who is now the Vatican’s prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy—is a target for “show trial” treatment, he said.

“There’s a desire for a scalp, for a big name to go down,” Archbishop Fisher said.

Do the critics really care about any children who may have been abused? Or is it a smokescreen for trouble. I don't think Pope Francis would have appointed him to a Vatican commission had he thought there was a problem.
