Speaking at UN, Cardinal Turkson stresses link between climate change, world poverty

June 29, 2015

The president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace underlined the link between environmental degradation and world poverty, as expressed in the papal encyclical Laudato Si’, in a June 29 address to a UN meeting on climate change.

Citing the words of Pope Francis, Cardinal Peter Turkson told the meeting in New York that climate change is “one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our day.” He went on to decry the lack of commitment to address the issue.

The fundamental problem, Cardinal Turkson said, is the attitude of powerful leaders and societies. Again quoting Pope Francis, he said: “The same mindset which stands in the way of making radical decisions to reverse the trend of global warming also stands in the way of achieving the goal of eliminating poverty. A more responsible overall approach is needed to deal with both problems: the reduction of pollution and the development of poorer countries and regions.”
