$25M given to retired religious from national collection

June 26, 2015

The National Religious Retirement Office has granted $25 million to 394 religious communities to help pay for medication, nursing care, and other expenses associated with the care of retired religious.

The grants were funded by an annual collection taken up in parishes in the United States in December. The collection raised $28.3 million.

“Additional funding will be allocated for religious communities with the greatest needs and for ongoing education in retirement planning and eldercare delivery,” according to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. “93% of donations aid elderly religious and their communities, while the remaining 7% are used for administration and promotion of the annual appeal.”

The National Religious Retirement Office is jointly sponsored by the Conference of Major Superiors of Men, the Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

It's actually a very small amount per retired sister. It is helpful to religious communities, but does not do much to resolve serious shortfalls in retirement funding.

I don't know ... $25 million from a *national collection* does not sound that impressive to me. What's that, 25 cents per church-going Catholic?
