Philippine cardinal welcomes overture by Islamist rebels

June 25, 2015

In a move hailed by a Philippine cardinal, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has begun to surrender its weapons following a peace agreement.

Beginning in 1978, the MILF used violence in its attempt to gain greater autonomy for the Muslim Moro people in Philippine. Cardinal Orlando Quevedo of Cotabato welcomed the surrender of 75 weapons as “an important step, which should convince the public to support the peace efforts between the government and MILF,” the Fides news agency reported.
