Orthodox cathedral desecrated in Alaska

June 23, 2015

An Orthodox cathedral was recently desecrated in Kodiak, Alaska, according to an Alaska Public Media report.

“It’s clear from the pattern of destruction that this dear soul is deeply troubled and his anger and his rage appeared to be directed at, frankly, God,” said Father Innocent Dresdow, the cathedral’s dean. “And from the perspective of the Church, he knew exactly which things were holiest. And those were the things that were in absolute disarray.”

Arkimedes Garcia, 21, has been arrested in connection with the desecration.

According to its website, Holy Resurrection Cathedral was founded in 1794 and is the oldest Orthodox parish in North America. It is part of the Orthodox Church in America, which is recognized by the Russian Orthodox Church (the largest of the Orthodox churches) but not recognized by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (which holds a primacy of honor in Orthodoxy).
