Pope Francis will visit Central African Republic in November, says nuncio

June 12, 2015

Archbishop Franco Coppola, the apostolic nuncio to the Central African Republic, has announced that Pope Francis will visit the nation in November, according to a report by Agence Africaine de Presse.

In March 2013, Islamist Séléka rebels seized power, resulting in violence against some Christian institutions. Some anti-balaka forces that opposed Séléka in turn committed violence against Muslim civilians. The nation’s Catholic hierarchy has repeatedly denounced violence and called for peace.

In January 2014, a new provisional government came to power, and in July 2014, a ceasefire agreement was signed.
