Save those dying of hunger, Vatican official pleads at world’s fair

June 11, 2015

Speaking at the world’s fair in Milan, the prelate who oversees the Vatican’s internal affairs emphasized the importance of feeding the hungry.

The theme of Expo 2015 is “feeding the planet, energy for life.”

“More than two billion people suffer from malnutrition, and many of them also from chronic hunger,” said Archbishop Giovanni Becciu, the sostituto of the Secretary of State. Lamenting the “absence of the will to share,” the prelate quoted the 12th-century Decree of Gratian: “feed the man dying of hunger, for if you have not fed him, you have killed him.”

After discussing other issues related to food, including food safety and the diversity of food cultures, Archbishop Becciu recalled a petition of the Litany of the Saints: “from plague, famine, and war, deliver us, O Lord.”
