Aid to the Church in Need tops €100 million in grants for 2014

June 10, 2015

Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) supplied more than €100 million ($147 million) in support for embattled Christians in 2014, the international Catholic charity has announced.

ACN, which sponsors over 5,000 projects in 20 different countries, set a new record for spending in 2014, spurred in large part by the flight of Christians under persecution in the Middle East. The group provided nearly $10 million in funding for programs providing aid to refugees in Iraq and Syria.

ACN also offered support for 9,669 seminarians (one in twelve seminarians worldwide) and 9,790 women religious. The group provided 1.4 million books, including Bibles and other Christian literature—for religious-education programs.

Roughly one-third of ACN’s spending in 2014 went to Africa, to provide material support for dioceses that are impoverished but rapidly growing.
