Italian film composer directs premier of new Mass honoring Pope Francis

June 10, 2015

Ennio Morricone, the Italian composer who has won multiple award for his film soundtracks, directed the premiere of a Mass honoring Pope Francis on June 10.

The Missa Papae Francisci was performed by the Orchestra Roma Sinfonietta, with Morricone himself conducting, at the Gesu, the mother church of the Society of Jesus.

The Mass was composed at the request of Jesuit leaders, who asked Morricone to write the work for the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the restoration of the Jesuit order.

Morricone has won three Grammy awards and two Golden Globes for his film work, and has been nominated five times for Oscars.
