Ukraine: churches now permitted to establish schools
June 04, 2015
Ukraine’s parliament has passed a bill permitting churches to establish schools, according to the Religious Information Service of Ukraine.
Until the law was passed, church-related charitable organizations were able to found schools and universities, but churches themselves could not.
“Any person, any citizen is entitled to establish their own private educational institution, and religious organizations are devoid of this right,” lawmaker Liliya Hrynevych said before the vote. “This is a result of our post-Soviet interpretation of the separation of church and state principle.”
