Protect journalists in wartime, Vatican envoy urges UN

The Vatican’s representative at UN headquarters in New York supported measures to protect journalists during military conflicts, in a May 27 address to the Security Council.
Archbishop Bernardito Auza remarked that “dedicated journalists in conflict settings provide a lifeline to those trapped behind combat lines or caught in the crossfire.” Reporters can also provide a vital source of accurate information, he said, at a time when objective news is at a premium. “The parties in conflict are obviously not always reliable sources of objective information,” the archbishop observed.
