Present the beauty of Christian marriage, Pope tells Dominican bishops

May 28, 2015

Pope Francis received the bishops of the Dominican Republic in audience on May 28 and called upon them to “reinforce the faith and identity of all the members of the Church.”

The Caribbean nation of 10.4 million is 88% Catholic.

“Marriage and the family are going through a serious cultural crisis,” the Pope continued, as he called upon the bishops to present “the beauty of Christian marriage … an act of faith and love in which the spouses, by their free consent, become transmitters of the blessing and grace of God for the Church and society.”

Recalling that it was on Dominican soil that the evangelization of the Americas began, the Pope also called upon the bishops to be attentive to the care of priests and seminarians, to the plight of immigrants, the apostolate of the laity, environmental stewardship, and problems such as “trafficking in drugs and people, corruption, domestic violence, abuse, and the exploitation of children.”
