Be prepared for the 'final farewell,' Pope advises congregation

May 19, 2015

In his homily at morning Mass on May 18, Pope Francis spoke about different ways of saying goodbye.

The Pope spoke about the sadness of people who are leaving their loved ones, or their homeland. He mentioned refugees from Myanmar, and the “great existential farewell” of Christians and Yazidis being driven out of Iraq, with no expectation that they will be able to return.

Then, more important, there is “the final farewell,” the Pope remarked: the time when one faces the end of one’s life on earth. He encouraged the faithful to think about that last farewell, and prepare themselves with an examination of conscience: “Am I prepared to entrust to God all that I have? To entrust myself to God?”
