French Guiana’s bishop pleads for donations as funds run out
May 19, 2015
Bishop Emmanuel Lafont of Cayenne, French Guiana’s sole diocese, announced in May 17 letter that the diocese no longer has funds to pay property taxes or compensate priests.
Alain Tien-Long, president of the General Council of French Guiana, recently announced that French territory, located in South America, will no longer pay priests’ salaries.
Bishop Lafont, whose diocese has operated with a deficit for three years, told the faithful that only 10% of practicing Catholics contributed to his Lenten appeal for funds, leading him to exhort the other 90% to tithe.
