Luxembourg's premier joins partner in homosexual marriage

May 15, 2015

Prime Minister Xavier Bettel of Luxembourg has entered in a legal marriage with his homosexual partner, Gauthier Bestenay, in a ceremony at Luxembourg City town hall.

Bettel, who became prime minister in December 2013, said that he wanted a quiet ceremony. Same-sex marriages have been legally recognized in Luxembourg since last year.

Bettel becomes the 2nd European government leader to be a partner in a same-sex union, following Iceland’s Johanna Sigurdardottir, who was prime minister in 2010 when she entered into a same-sex union. Bettel’s position will become more prominent on July 1, when Luxembourg takes over the revolving presidency of the European Union. More than 90% of Luxembourg’s citizens are baptized Catholics.
