Environmental concern should put people first, says Cypriot archbishop

May 14, 2015

Archbishop Joseph Soueif of Cyprus, one of two finalists in the election of a new president for Caritas International, said that concern for the environment should begin with respect for human dignity.

In a May 13 interview with Catholic News Agency, the Maronite Catholic archbishop said that concern for the environment means “to care for the human being first, the poor (and) the marginalized, and for nature, creation, which God did for us, and what God did for us is good.” The Caritas International assembly, held in Rome this week, selected Cardinal Luis Tagle of Manila over Archbishop Soueif to be the new president of the international consortium of Catholic relief agencies.
