Cardinal Tagle chosen as president of Caritas International

May 14, 2015

Cardinal Luis Tagle of Manila has been elected the new president of Caritas International, the worldwide consortium of Catholic relief agencies.

Cardinal Tagle was elected at the 20th assembly of Caritas International leaders, meeting in Rome this week, to succeed Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga, who had served two terms as the organization’s president.

Speaking to the assembly from Chicago, where he was receiving an honorary degree, Cardinal Tagle thanked the delegates for their confidence. “Let us together strengthen the Church of the poor so our witness can help so our witness can help guild a world of understanding justice, true freedom and peace,” he said.

The Caritas assembly, as expected, chose the Filipino cardinal over another finalist, Maronite Archbishop Joseph Soueif of Cyprus. The secretary-general of Caritas International, Oliver Roy, was confirmed in that post.
