Anglican archbishop sees accord with Rome on 80% of doctrinal issues

May 08, 2015

The Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) has produced general agreement on 80% of the doctrinal issues under discussion, an Anglican prelate told Vatican Radio.

Archbishop David Moxen, who heads Anglican Centre in Rome and acts as the representative of the Anglican communion to the Holy see, conceded that there is still substantial difference between the Catholic and Anglican views on the remaining 20% of doctrinal issues.

ARCIC has discussed a wide range of theological questions, including the Eucharist, marriage, ordination, and the nature of Church authority.

That old 80-20 rule is found everywhere!

Although the heads might eventually agree, the Anglican people in the pews will reject the Catholic Church's teaching on divorce and contraception. These issues must be addressed.

Disagreements on doctrinal "issues" may not be so easily quantifiable. Sometimes 1% could be exactly 1% too many.

Good news, but doesn't the "remaining 20% of doctrinal issues" include some - not only "substantial" but even irreconcilable - differences: "Eucharist, marriage, ordination, and the nature of Church authority"? (I'm sure, though, that those members of the episcopate, especially the German episcopate, who adhere to various modernist heresies will have no problem dealing with these differences and simply sweeping them aside, if not now, then when they completely control the College of Cardinals.)

Has not this always been the case? Don't most Prostestents agree with about 80% of what the Church teaches? The sad thing is that most Catholics today only agree with about 80% of what the Church teaches! Unfortunately, that's not enough.

Oh, wow. Is that an admission that Anglicanism is in formal heresy over one-fifth of what Christ left the Church? That's what it sounds like.
